2/25/13. For us, a day to remember.

Early AM one of our favorite rough necks rolled his truck on slick roads while travelling from Louisiana to work his shift on our site. David is only 18 and loved by all. Just a great kid. Man, was he lucky. No serious damage to him or his truck. However, just the thought of losing this young guy scared us.

It’s said often enough……….”You never know.”

And then the iniquitous winds came. Around 11 am, while driving down 80 to Kenedy, winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts to 50 mph kicked up. Suddenly the vehicles in front of me disappeared through a curtain of dirt. It looked like a scene out of the dust bowl era as the winds blew soil from the open fields 1000’s of feet into the air. The mass was thick enough to obnubilate the horizon.

I was not to be deterred in my journey to the Kenedy Walmart and arrived at my destination in good time. A somewhat frantic call from my wife while I was checking out informed me that “The wind just destroyed the awning.”

Whoa Nelly. How is that possible? I had left the awning rolled up and securely locked in place.

This was the scene when I got back to the rig.

Apparently the winds were strong enough to rip the entire locked awning from the side of the MH. What a mess. The entire awning, hardware and all, will have to be replaced. Seems like we just can’t get ahead. The monthly repair expenses on this beast are eating us alive.
