“Everything gets old if you do it often enough.” – From The Last Picture Show

2/25/13. For us, a day to remember.

Early AM one of our favorite rough necks rolled his truck on slick roads while travelling from Louisiana to work his shift on our site. David is only 18 and loved by all. Just a great kid. Man, was he lucky. No serious damage to him or his truck. However, just the thought of losing this young guy scared us.

It’s said often enough……….”You never know.”

And then the iniquitous winds came. Around 11 am, while driving down 80 to Kenedy, winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts to 50 mph kicked up. Suddenly the vehicles in front of me disappeared through a curtain of dirt. It looked like a scene out of the dust bowl era as the winds blew soil from the open fields 1000’s of feet into the air. The mass was thick enough to obnubilate the horizon.

DIRT

I was not to be deterred in my journey to the Kenedy Walmart and arrived at my destination in good time. A somewhat frantic call from my wife while I was checking out informed me that “The wind just destroyed the awning.”

Whoa Nelly. How is that possible? I had left the awning rolled up and securely locked in place.

This was the scene when I got back to the rig.

Apparently the winds were strong enough to rip the entire locked awning from the side of the MH. What a mess. The entire awning, hardware and all, will have to be replaced. Seems like we just can’t get ahead. The monthly repair expenses on this beast are eating us alive.

It is what it is.

Wow. Sorry about your awning. We also had terrible winds over here by Pearsall. But we just talked to the kids east of Kansas City, Missouri, and they just got another foot of snow on top of the foot they already had!!!! It’s bad everywhere right now.

Thank you for bring that up Penny. I can deal with anything except illness. No matter what happens to us down here, there are many other parts of the world with more serious problems. Thanks for your thoughts.

So sorry about your awning but glad you all are safe. Those winds, which are still continuing today, were really treacherous. We brought in our slides yesterday when the RV started rocking. We got up to 40mph and it seemed worse because of the wide open area we’re in. Today, the wind is supposed to be between 10-20mph until this evening. However, that could change. It seems no one can accurately predict the weather anymore. We feel your pain on the expenses.

Oh my…I’m glad there was no serious damage to David or his truck. What a scare that must have been. Sometimes there’s just nothing you can do.

Ouch! Sorry to hear about your awning. And that dust looked just awful.
