“Good judgment comes from experience and experience comes from bad judgment” – The Night Shift by Brian Goldman
This coming Monday (7/17) we will finally end a marathon work effort.
13 months without a break. A day off. An hour off.
13 months of breathing dust and inhaling diesel fumes.
13 months of a form of isolation.
13 months of enduring a hostile work environment.
In retrospect, we should not have done that.
The experience has had a profound effect on us. I sense I’m experiencing something akin to the thousand yard stare.
I am so burned out.
I have always subscribed to the idea. Now I understand it. “Stop and Smell the Roses”

Bob, could you explain why it was a hostile work enviroment? We’re checking into doing gate guard, but don’t want to walk into hostility. TYIA

A clash of personalities. Nothing else. The reward of Gate Guarding, besides the money, is the wonderful people you meet. Go for it and discover for yourself.

I can’t believe you lasted that long! We made it through gate guarding for two months. Never again.

We’ve been doing it for 7 years. Some good things. Some bad things. In this case we should have taken some time off. A bad decision that got out of hand. Thanks for your thoughts.

We are fortunate that our security company allows us to hire replacement guards. We took a vacation the last time we worked a long term gate. It helps a lot.

Bob –
You surely need a break, brother! Hope this means you’re going to kick back for awhile, put your feet up, enjoy a few cold ones and just take in life. Old guys like us deserve it, and especially you after that marathon!

Thanks Mike I didn’t get into much detail but suffice to say I’m not in a good place right now. It’s gonna get better.
