Highway Adventures or Road Rage of Another Kind

“Never slap a man who’s chewing tobacco.” Will Roger

12/28/12 8:30 am

Left Sherman, headed for Karnes county. Planned a 2 day trip spending first night in Schulenberg. About 350 miles first day leaving a short, 90 mile run to the gate the second.

Didn’t work out that way.

2:30 pm

14 miles short of our planned stop on highway 77 and just 1 mile south of Lagrange, TX our front driver side tire blew. 77 is a 2 lane road without shoulder. Hence, we managed to pull off the road and stop with the MH listing scarily. It seemed to want to just lie down on its side.

FLAT B

This  is not us but note the listing of the MH. Our MH listed like this.

So there we sat. As our predicament began to sink in, 18 wheelers raced by within inches of our outside mirrors.

FLATC

OK – this  is not Gaby but she looked just this when I told her she had to get out and change the tire.

FLAT D

Our tire looked something like this.

Long story short – about 7:30 pm we limped into an RV park ¼ mile down the road minus one of our dual tires on the rear. Our tire had to be ordered and will not arrive here till Monday. So here we sit – till Monday and possibly till Tuesday.

13 years on the road and this is the first blow out we’ve had. Guess we’ve been lucky. It could have been worse – much worse.

FLAT E

It could have happened here.

FLAT G

Or here.

FLATF

Or here.

Still…………….it was unsettling and something I hope we never experience again.

  1. Very glad you made it. as my father used to say, “drive carefully, the wife you save just may be your own.” At least one good thing happened…..I was able to get to visit with y’all for a bit. I enjoyed the visit very much. For those who follow your blog who have not had the personal “Badger experience” they are missing out!

Glad you are okay. We had a blowout on our truck on Friday. Ended up having to be towed and it did significant damage to the truck. May have to blog about it. Happy New Year! Penny

Too exciting for me. I would have had a look of terror like the picture of (not) Gaby. I’m happy no one was hurt and hopefully there was not extensive damage to your RV.
Take care. Have a happy New Year.

No one hurt and no serious damage to the RV. Thankful for that but I hope to never have this experience again. Thanks for your kind words.
