Sexy Ears

“Some old guy once said that the meaning of life is that it ends.”  From “Wanted Man” by Lee Child

Years ago I decided that 70 was the idoneous point at which middle age gave way to old. With that guideline, in 6 months I will be old.

OK. So what. As they say, it beats the alternative.

Well, my mind is beginning to mess with my common sense.

I know that as the years slip away, my body will change. Common sense.

I’m a sexual creature. Mind games.

Sometimes common sense and mind games clash as they did during a recent exam by a young Optometrist.

She was young. She was nice looking. She was smart. She had cleavage.

As I strapped myself into the examination device, with chin thrust forward and forehead firmly in place, she explained in great detail and with absolute authority what was about to happen.

Some of the info stuck. Mostly, my mind was somewhere back in time, back to when I was 18. Mind games.

My God, there is something very wrong with me. Pervert. Common sense.

I wrestled with the absurdity of where my mind was going,

As the exam progressed, depending on which eye she was peering into, she would instruct me to look either at her right or left ear. Wishing to reclaim that 69 year old brain from that 18 year old idiot, I focused hard on those ears.

Those ears, those gorgeous, sensuous, sexy ears. God help me. I am incorrigible.

I blurted out “you have very nice ears”. Thank you she said. My husband agrees.

At that moment I felt dirty. Suddenly the examination chair felt like a trap.

Thank God I didn’t comment on her cleavage. Maybe when I’m 80.

  1. I also like that word! I hope I can remember it for the appropriate time to use it! I always liked the answer Satchel Paige reportedly gave when asked about his age. Nobody, including Satchel, knew for SURE when he was born. Anyway, someone asked Satchel how old he was, and he replied, “How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you was?” I am pretty sure he meant the double entendre of that remark, but I have always wondered if we would feel and act somewhat different if we didn’t attach a number to our age. We all know some folks age more gracefully than others. My gosh, Bob, you are married to a woman who defies age, and we know it is not because you made life so easy for her!! 🙂

Yes, I believe we all think we act younger than we are and yes, in our minds…..by the way, she did have nice ears if the picture is accurate! Not that I am making an undue aura fuss over it. (I hope I don’t have to explain that) One thing I really try to do is not talk like an old person. I clear my throat and try to get the whine and quiver out of my voice. It is easy to lapse into that, I think.

70 is the new 69!! Take heart! My philosophy is that I may grow older, but I refuse to grow up and believe maturity is highly overrated. I still can enjoy a good snowball fight, although the arm has lost some of the ability to hurl with much velocity, and, of course, living in Texas has limited the availability of ammo. And, I think it may be truly over for someone when he can’t notice when a young lady has nice……ears.

Honest…but funny! Your post reminds me of a conversation I recently had with my husband. We think middle and old age, in terms of numbers, needs to be redefined. Most people we know who are in our age group (yours included) all feel in their (very stable) mind that they feel and act younger than their birth certificate says. Middle age is no longer 50 nor, do I believe it stops at 70. Perhaps it’s time (and good luck with this idea) that we stop defining people by their age. Let’s stick to the basics like pervert, tinkerer, thinker, etc. Thanks for a realistic and wonderfully funny post today:)

Vickie….always nice to read your interesting comments. On the subject, I’ve got another thought. We define age per mind set. If that were the case, I would be a teen ager. Like that idea.
